What does it feel like to travel more than 6,000 miles to see the fruits of your good works? Representatives of the Jewish Federation of Miami found out this week when, in an emotional visit, they were able to observe their charity dollars at work. They met the people responsible for transforming their donations into innovative solutions that help people and listened to the stories that connect their generosity to its recipients.
The delegation was warmly greeted by Gilad Palmer, the director of the Yerucham branch of Yad Sarah, the health coordinator of Yerucham, and by Rachel Dover, director of the international desk and donations in the Public Relations Department at Yad Sarah House in Jerusalem.
Gilad recalled the early days when people in need called his house at all hours and his baby daughter played among the wheelchairs. The health coordinator of Yerucham spoke of her search for a TENS (Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation) machine for her pregnant daughter only to find there was one at the Yad Sarah branch in Yerucham.
"I couldn't believe that right here in Yerucham was the TENS machine I was so frantically searching for. I was so worried someone else would borrow it first that I went late in the evening to get it. I was so surprised by what I saw in that small apartment that I immediately called the mayor and told him we must find a suitable building for the Yerucham branch."
The current premises are in a central location with parking nearby. They are very small, but Gilad hopes with the help of the donation to add a portable structure to use as an equipment warehouse. He also hopes to extend the branch hours with the help of local youth. The visitors were very enthusiastic about the idea and said they would consider a further donation specifically for the benefit of young people.
Rachel Dover updated the group on the branch's development since the move even with the current limited hours. She mentioned the heavier equipment such as hospital beds and patient hoists that are stored in the Beer Sheva logistical center and are also available to residents of Yerucham.
The visitors asked to be kept informed of developments and activities taking place at the branch so they in turn can keep their donors informed. 'It's important for us to be able to share the stories with our donors so they will understand the good their donations are doing here."
The visitors were so touched when they saw the balloons that are given to new parents who come to borrow cribs and breast milk pumps they asked to take a picture with them.
