Jerusalem Exhibition and Guidance Center Director Shani Rosenfeld talks to Yad Sarah volunteer writer Charna Duchanov about how to stay safe during the upcoming holiday season

At Yad Sarah, Passover offers an opportunity to find solutions that make the holidays safer and more enjoyable for all of the extended Yad Sarah family We spoke to the Jerusalem Exhibition and Guidance Center's Shani Rosenfeld to get her take on how to survive the holidays when one is dealing with functional difficulties. The Center's energetic director has lots of creative advice on how to get through the holidays successfully and in good health, using the resources of Yad Sarah that are at everyone's disposal. She suggests taking things one step at a time, using organization as well as all kinds of specially designed accessories and aids - available either at Yad Sarah's lending centers or at our Yasam stores - to make things easier and, even more importantly, safer. All the activities needed to prepare for the Passover holiday can be overwhelming, so start by making a list of things you need to accomplish. This allows you to feel in control, doesn't waste time or energy, and helps with memory issues. If writing is an issue, use your computer to type the list and check off items as you go along. Make sure you don't carry heavy loads of packages in one hand. Use delivery services and shopping carts where possible or use a plastic carrier for packages that relieves the pressure on hands weakened by arthritis or stroke. Use a flashlight on a chain to make sure you have light at all times in the stairwell and get a wristband for your cane, if you use one, so it doesn't fall every time you take out your keys to open the door. Make several trips to bring packages up the stairs or from room to room in your home. One of our favorite items is a basket available for a 4-wheeled walker that allows you to easily carry things from one part of the house to the other. Don't hesitate to use accessories that relieve stress and keep you from putting too much strain on muscles. Yad Sarah has a handle grip that gives you something to hang on to when getting in and out of the car. You can also buy all sorts of lumbar and seat cushions for both car and sofa, chair and bed from Yad Sarah that will relieve pressure on sensitive parts of the body. Use an adjustable perching stool to assure your safety while working in the kitchen and make sure your knives are sharp to cut down on unnecessary exertion. You can purchase special knives designed for weaker hands at Yasam. Sit at a table when you do your chopping, mixing, and measuring and don't hesitate to ask children and grandchildren to help out whenever possible. The spiritual aspect of the holiday is, of course, very important for everyone and, once again, Yad Sarah can be counted on to offer creative solutions that will allow all members of the family to take part. Don't carry heavy bags with you on long walks to the synagogue and bring along a seat or back cushion when invited out to a Seder, to make sure you will be comfortable sitting in one chair for several hours. Anyone with a broken leg or sprained ankle should not hesitate to use a wheelchair – trying to use crutches when not appropriate can just exacerbate one's discomfort. If you are having overnight guests with special needs, Yad Sarah can help you make their stay safer and more comfortable. Portable toilet seat grab bars are available for loan at Yad Sarah and will help them feel more secure. You can borrow cushions and bed raisers, as well. If you would like to borrow a wheelchair for the holidays from Yad Sarah, make sure you order early! Visit our website at http://www.yadsarah.org.il to find out how to order or call *6444 or e-mail us at info@yadsarah.org.il. Looking for a practical hostess gift for the holiday? Shani shared with us her five favorite things that are available at Yasam and will make a unique and handy gift for anyone: Hibuki' heated cushion for tight muscles and just to feel good' Long-handled sponge for washing those hard to reach places Helping Hand long handled reacher that helps anyone reach those out of the way places without straining muscles Wristband for walking cane so you don't drop it every time you pause to open a door or wash your hands Anti-slip bath mat for safety while bathing Holidays are wonderful and complicated and enjoyable and stressful for everyone. Let Yad Sarah help you make it easier and safer for you and your loved ones, especially those with special needs. A Happy and Kosher Passover to all from the Yad Sarah family!
