Yad Sarah's initiative helps mourners with special needs reach the grave of their loved ones who fell in battle defending our country

I came from Petah Tikva to Mount Herzl in Jerusalem, and I'm the only one left from the family, my wife died three weeks ago, and you helped me to reach the grave." This is how Levy Carmi, 92, came to visit the grave of Captain Oded Chai, the cousin of his wife, who fell in battle during the occupation of the Hirbat Al Hamama outpost (near Yad Vashem) during the War of Independence. "Oded had a father and a sister, but they also died. I walk very slowly, and Yad Sarah helped me with the wheelchair," Levy said. In a complex logistical operation on Remembrance Day for Israel's Fallen Soldiers, 50 volunteer youth –students from Himmelfarb, Netiv Meir and Kfar Haroeh – led hundreds of elderly to the plots of their loved ones in the cemeteries on Mount Herzl in Jerusalem and Kiryat Shaul in Tel Aviv. "The students were already waiting at the cemeteries from 8:00 AM, said Eitan Dahari, head of the logistics department at Yad Sarah, who said that the steep rises and heavy heat at the cemetery were a challenge for the students. Fanny Suissa, 74, used a wheelchair to visit her brother's grave, Yitzhak, who was killed in the War of Attrition. "He went to rescue an officer in the Bethlehem area, and his APC turned over, and he was killed. He was only 22, "she said. She was very moved by the initiative of Yad Sarah. "It's hard for me to walk," she added. Albert came to Israel from Paris in the framework of the Migdal Group, which adopts the Border Police. "Every year we hold a fundraising event in their honor. We came to Israel to celebrate Independence Day and came to Mount Herzl to attend the Border Police memorial service, "he said."Your chair helped me a lot," he said, "it was a very far walk for me." Saba Dudu's grandchildren and great-grandchildren joined him in visiting the grave of his younger brother Ephraim Makler, who was killed in the Battle of Latrun. "Efraim was a paramedic in the department of Arik Sharon in the Alexandroni Brigade." He was wounded in a battle near Beit Berl, recovered, and then fell in battle. Mordechai Mizrahi arrives at Mount Herzl to visit the grave of his commander, Captain Yosef Algamis, who was killed on the first day of the Six Day War. "I was the medic of the company, he was killed when a bullet was fired from a mosque in the village of Abasan As I get older, it's very helpful to have this help from Yad Sarah." Tziona Levy finds it very difficult to walk. Nevertheless, she makes sure to visit her brother's grave every year – Avi Mizrahi, who died in 1959. "He was a strong guy, he died at the age of 19," she said, weeping. She had nothing but praise for the young volunteer who led her to the grave. For the youth, it was a challenging experience but gave them great satisfaction. Oded: "It was tough, a lot of ups and downs, but it helps people and it's important. People blessed me over and over; all the grandmothers think I'm their grandson." Eyal: "It was definitely tiring, but we received lots of blessings. One grandmother invited me to her home. "Moshe: "It was very satisfying, everyone blessed me and said, "What would we do without you?'" Almog: "It was fun and difficult, but for a mitzvah we do everything." "The students were wonderful, and they thanked us for the opportunity to do such a meaningful kindness," concluded Moshe Teicheler, director of the central region branches, who organized the effort in the Kiryat Shaul cemetery.
