Ella and Girsch, immigrants from the FSU, recommit to each other and to the Jewish people in a moving ceremony organized by their friends at Yad Sarah

Many new immigrants from the former Soviet Union settled in the desert city of Arad in the south of Israel. Ella Brusilovsky is one of them and she also happens to be a volunteer at Yad Sarah. Among other things, she helps the branch's volunteers communicate with Russian-speaking clients. Ella's husband, Gregory, suffered from myopia as a child and today is completely blind. They were married in Russia in a civil marriage. A year ago, Gregory decided he wanted to undergo circumcision. After the ceremony, the couple became increasingly interested in Judaism, and began to visit the synagogue with Yeshayahu Yungar, the husband of Shifra, director of the Yad Sarah branch in Arad. After a while, the couple decided to remarry - this time according to Jewish law. Yeshayahu, who serves as the beadle of the Ben Zion synagogue, organized the ceremony with the rest of the congregants. They hired caterers and musicians. Rabbi Yanon Ilani performed the ceremony, and volunteers from the Yad Sarah branch along with members of Arad's Torah community and girls from the religious high school came to dance and make merry. "In Russia I was not allowed to live as a Jew," says Gregory, who changed his name to Gersh, after his grandfather. Gersh comes to the synagogue with Yeshayahu, and although he cannot read Hebrew, he listens to the prayers and is slowly learning some of them by heart. It's amazing where volunteering at Yad Sarah can lead!
