When you contact Yad Sarah about one of its many services, you may find yourself the happy recipient of so much more

Yad Sarah's legal aid service helps provide seniors with quality of life within their communities and offers protection from some of the issues that plague this population. "She is 93 years old, very lonely since she was widowed 20 years ago," says attorney Shlomo Friedman, a volunteer in Yad Riva's legal counseling department. She cannot leave the house; there is no one to take her out, so I found myself visiting her at home." Mrs. Yona Gordon, the coordinator of the Be'er Sheva branch who accompanied Mr. Friedman on the home visit, continues the chilling story: "After two heart attacks, she suffers from a foot ulcer, but from a quick glance at her home, she will not let her age and her difficult situation overwhelm her! Her modest little apartment is clean and orderly, and the niece - who invited us - takes care of everything she needs." The Be'er Sheva woman needed Yad Sarah's legal advice after a neighbor chose to ignore the damage caused to her apartment by a leak from his home. He understood that she was alone, and unfortunately exploited the situation and refused to make the necessary repairs. However, the Yad Sarah volunteers were determined to help. When Mrs. Gordon and Mr. Friedman visited the house, they realized there were quite a few things they could do to alleviate the situation. First, a claim was issued, which was submitted to the land registry, which required the neighbor to immediately repair the damage from the leak from his apartment. In addition, the legal aid team successfully challenged the decision of the relevant authorities to refuse the elderly woman's request for a home-based caregiver. But of course, that was not all. Yad Sarah's manager of the Be'er Sheva branch, Michael Benson, sent volunteers who do home repairs, and they fixed the paint in the bathroom and restored the grateful woman's home to its normally pristine condition. The elderly woman was invited to participate in activities and day tours – facilitated by the use of YadSaraVans – planned especially for people with disabilities, which helped relieve her loneliness, as did the now weekly visits from a Yad Sarah volunteer.
